I've placed clean/cloudy glasses in the dishwasher and used CLR instead of detergent with good results. My old machine had a manual dial and I could reset the time so that it would wash longer without draining the CLR. You could try vinegar as well...

The rinse aid actually WORKS on my new machine and I have very little clouding. I run an empty wash cycle with CLR occasionally to keep the dishwasher clean. Try lowering the amount of detergent per load- that seems to help maintain things.

Soft water is important (as you know) as is having rinse aid in the dishwasher.
