Is your Mercury a BE model as in “Before Ethanol”? My 1972 Mercury was built long before ethanol became popular so everything in the fuel system needed replacement for it to run correctly. Parts replaced included all fuel lines, fuel pump, carburetor gaskets, carburetor plastic parts, carburetor floats, fuel tank float, fuel shutoff valve, fuel primer bulb, and more than likely a few other parts I don’t remember.

The first time in the water after having the work done at a Mercury dealer I couldn’t get the engine started so I took it back to the dealer. He failed to tell me that I would have to learn a new starting procedure to get it running.

Cost of the repair was not cheap and after the lesson in starting it sure runs good. Cruising speed is back to 5000 rpms as it was before the ethanol fiasco.
