All lettuce to me is bitter.

Well lettuce sap or milk is bitter, and all the salads from the chicory family even more so.
But there is nothing wrong with a bit of bitterness, it's only because you are not used to it.
I guess that's probably the case with most Americans, since there is sugar or HFCS in almost every food, even those that are supposed to be savory.
I can guarantee you that you will be seeking out bitter vegetables after you get past that dislike.

It's funny, I mentioned braised lettuce only yesterday, on an earlier blog of Ed.
Lettuce and pearl onion are the typical French accompaniment to garden peas.
Just add a bit of sugar to the dish, it's allowed, when there is something bitter in it, just not systematically!  ;)
