West of Broken Bow | Yesterday evening I heard some blue jays hollering like I've never heard before. I was inside when I first noticed the commotion. Went behind the house and looked up in the ash tree to try and see what was going on. At first I spotted a male cardinal dancing around excitedly. After walking a bit further while looking straight up, I could see two blue jays frantically flying back and forth above one particular limb. Had no idea there was a nest up there.
A squirrel had climbed into the nest and was fighting with the birds to stay put. I've never seen a squirrel act in such a way. It finally left the nest after repeatedly being pecked by the birds. It even tried to grab hold of the blue jays. Later on the birds were no where in sight, but broken bits of egg shell were laying on the ground underneath the same tree. That squirrel was definitely responsible for it.
Do squirrels eat bird eggs or even kill baby birds? This was a totally new observation for me.
