18 degree before top dead center is correct. Line up the marks in the window of the pump, and then bolt the gear on. The bolt holes are slotted for fine tuning adjustment. Hook all the lines up and prime it. I would leave the front plate cover off until you can determine it will fire and start. You could be half off. If it won't start, then line the marks back up in the pump. You should now be back at 18 degree BTDC. Remove the gear and rotate the engine one revolution to 18 degree BTDC again. Bolt the gear on again and see if it will start. The marks in the pump and the marks on the crank pulley both correspond to the number one cylinder.
