Subject: RE: Holstein calf starter feed recipe

NE Iowa
We used to do the week old Holstein thing and always made our own starter. Start with the 34% Baby Beef if you can can get it with a low rate of Bovatec. We used to mix about 35% whole shell corn, 35% whole oats, and about 30% of the 34% pellet. We would run a small batch into the grinder mixer without engaging the hammers. Then while we let it mix I would pour liquid molasses into the top hatch. Used to make it pretty damp with molasses and it would be very close to the commercial bagged calf starter on a protein (~18%) and consistency basis. Making your own will save you several dollars a bag. Could also mix it in a cement mixer if you want. Need to mix it quite often to keep it fresh.
