years ago i lived in washington dc while stationed there in the navy. seems to me i went through gary and down to indianapolis. later pennsylvania turnpike and came in to the washington dc beltway from the north. unless things have changed a lot, i would not recommend being out much after dark, and some areas even in the day.

time your arrival so you don't get caught in rush hour traffic. get hotel reservations at a hotel with paid secure parking. it would be nice if it was within walking distance to the mall, but those can be real spendy. may have to stay farther away and take a cab. get a good car gps. that is a big help. allow plenty of time. good luck and post back on your experience.
