Eastern Iowa | Dime thickness is what I always try and keep. I've never had to adjust mine that I can remember, however. The stationary knife gets adjusted every couple days, though. Everyone else pretty much has the procedure down, if you do it that way you'll be just fine. I sharpen knives at the beginning of the alfalfa season, and it does a good job for the 40-50 loads I need. Then I sharpen again for corn silage in the fall.
The sides of your blower need to be watched for wear just as much as the bottom of the band. They always seem to wear out there first. I patched mine, blowers aren't cheap!
