This is one of those examples that good fences indeed make good neighbors.
I think if it was me, I would ask the landowners to pay for the original cost of the materials used to build the fence. No charge for the labor included to install it.
IMO, at this point this seems fair to both parties. If the landowners say no, shake hands and walk away.
