all over Iowa | No one said they aren't hungry - this is not treating the fenceline bunk as a self-feeder. Goal is to have the cattle eat slowly throughout the 24 hour day, so that some of them are not hungry at morning delivery because they cleaned up the bunk at first daylight (cattle naturally are most aggressive to the bunk at daybreak). As someone else said, feed in the bunk 23.5 hours a day. Shoot for slick bunks about 2 out of every three days at first feeding; if bunks are slick 3-4 days in a row give them a 3/4# DM bump. If bunks are managed (the key word here) the cattle are not slugged and the cattle are not starved. Of course, letting them slick the bunk every day makes bunk management a whole lot easier, but missed intake is missed gain, and any additional intake over maintenance improves F/G, as long as you aren't ahead of the cattle. | |
