N FLA | I've been jealous all winter of some of your white face calves. I looked forward to my first one. I bought this Hereford in January after I figured out the Papaw program. At that time, you could still catch a 4 or 5 month bred cow at cull price if the pecking order would let you have one. A lot of new money at the market has kind of thrown off our old rhythm. Anyway, she was 1060 lbs at 0.73 and 4 m bred. So I'm just tickled by her calf. She has a couple Coke bottle teats. But they'll do.
Story about black cow #1 was when I saw the light on Papaws program and it all clicked like a life changing event. I bought this big 7m bred 1440 lb cow for 0.91 lb. 4 cows later, an open 1470 lb cow sold for 0.98 lb. It became clear the kill guys had to discount for the calf. And they were paying me 0.07 lb to go home and calve her out and bring her back open. Those jokers. I'm not even sure if I want to bring this big girl back. Every heavy bred lately is running more like 1.30 lb. | |
