Subject: RE: Value of Rye for silage

Eastern Iowa
Well, rye silage is worth $35-40 a ton here and gets 4-4.5 ton per acre if it was managed well. So your gross is around $140-$180/ac. Cutting is around $15 an acre ($3-$4/ton) and chopping is worth $8/ton to chop, haul, and unload (according to ISU custom rate survey). So if you are figuring on handling that end yourself, the silage should be worth $25-$30/ton standing. I'd say around $80-$100/acre should have you covered with a little wiggle room?
