However, in general, that seems to be an appropriate mix. The cattle will tear into the alfalfa (scaring the heck out of a person) and then balance it off with the grasses in a half hour when they find those. My understanding is that a 40% alfalfa to grass is about perfect and cattle generally do ok on that most all the time.
Its best to have full cows to start with, turn them out with no dew on the grass, and perhaps limit them the first day or 2 as to the time on the new alfalfa.
I have small bits that are a mix about like yours, and my cattle have worked well on it over the years. That said, I still get a tiny uneasy feeling the first day.....
