Subject: RE: Holstein steer?

all over Iowa
Black calves sold at 735# can finish in 180 days and have a chance for good carcass premiums.
Holstein finish markets are on average $8 lower than live cattle, and 7 wt Holsteins will likely take at least 240 days to reach a proper weight and acceptable degree of finish. The black calves would be considered more predictable and dependable.
That's the reasons for the spread, but having said that the Holstein could have the better chance of making money.
