Subject: RE: Question

Ridgway, IL
I have a neighbor that short weans a lot of calves. I've mentioned him here before, very intensive management. Short weans all the calves and feeds them out in a bed pack barn. He is finishing his own calves at 13 months at over 1300lb live weight. Very good operator.

In discussions with him in the past, he mentions 90-100days being his benchmark weaning range. He has discussed the impact of maturity on the calves performance, siting that maturity is more important than the calves weight as an indication of its ability to function like calf should. At least that is what I got out of our talk, he's pretty advanced.

I gather he is particular about his weaning ration as well. I do believe how a short weaned calf is handled can have a big impact on its lifetime performance.

I say wean them on grass, get the mommas fed back up, and you'll have hit a home run!
