Subject: Our poor old gravel road

Highland Center, in Southeast Iowa

I've written before about our gravel roads here and the earlier lack of good, sensible maintenance. We recently got a new maintainer guy, and he seems to be doing a pretty good job in getting them back into decent condition. At least he's trying and paying attention, which is so very much better than what we had previously. We've been kind of excited to watch him bring the roads back to what they were years ago.

Starting this morning, the busy state highway west of us is closed for repair until the 16th of June, and a good deal of the traffic off that road is choosing to not use the marked detour, but to come a bit farther east and come past here instead. The marked detour is gravel as well, so there's not a lot of choices available. What a mess this is going to end up being. We had nearly 4" of rain Sunday and Monday, so the roads are a bit soft in the first place, but dust is still minimal yet. As soon as this dries out, the gravel dust is going to be horrendous. Dust is always a challenge we deal with, but between the semis and other traffic, it's going to get very dangerous very quickly. Doubt there's much to do about it but to caution those dear to us to slow down and pay extra attention when they're on the road.

Just rambling this morning..........hoping that I don't have to make a post asking for prayers in the coming month.
