Ben D, N CA - 5/14/2014 20:32 Interesting. I understand the idea that above a certain altitude, the sky is 'public'. Is there an actual number? I shoot things all the time around my place. Starlings, pigeons, whatever pests are around. But if someone happens to be flying a drone through my private shooting range that is my fault? "I understand the idea that above a certain altitude, the sky is 'public'. Is there an actual number?" In sparsely populated areas..the only altitude restriction on aircraft is 500 feet...and that can be horizonatally or vertically. take a 500 foot string..and that is the distance. Right now...as far as "shooting" anything that flies...it is a federal offense to shoot at an aircraft.... Probably soon..the FAA will officially define what an aircraft is....either "unmanned" or "manned" I Don't think it would be worth a stretch in Club Fed to be convicted of shooting at an aircraft....even if it is a drone.
