Central Iowa | I get sick every time, even if I wear a particulate mask. Bean dust is the worst for me.
Just a word to the wise, I met with a guy the other day that farms part time just as I do. He cleaned out a grain bin last August and got sick as well. Last October/November he developed a bit of a cough, like a smokers cough. He doesn't smoke, so the docs assumed bronchitis, and prescribed antibiotics. By January, they couldn't clear it up, took x-rays, and the upper half of his right lung was dark, so a biopsy was in order. After a bunch of inconclusive tests, a sample of his biopsy was sent to Mayo Clinic for diagnosis. Finally, last February, they figured it out.
It was a fungus growing in his lung. It had already killed half of one lung, so he had 3/4 of it removed. He's doing much better now.
Be informed, aware, and careful. Not all farm accidents happen slowly. His took 6 months to fully evolve. I'm in no hurry to crawl back into a bin. | |
