The cheapest, effective air filter is a box fan with an furnace air filter approximately the same size. The fan will run about $20, and the filter will depend on the level of filtration you desire.
Just turn on the fan, and "stick" the filter on the back side. The sound of the air can be soothing as you sleep, and it should be just as effective as most of the rest of the expensive air cleaners that you can buy.
