Subject: clear resin coating on wood help needed

Hey guys,

I am helping my son with his woodworking project for 4 H, he is making a corn hole game and we have the main board painted and smooth.
He wants to apply a decal and a glue a printed photo on photo paper to the board. I had an idea of applying clear resin on top to give it a deep thick shine and protect his decal and photo.

My only question is how do we keep the sides from getting the resin on, I figured masking tape, but what if the resin is too thick, or should we babysit it and keep the excess wiped away as soon as possible till it tacks up...

I have only played with this stuff once...

We bought the GLAZE COAT from FAMOWOOD at Lowes today

Any help, comments, or ideas very much appreciated !!!

Thanks in advance

Rog and Alvie
