south east Indiana | I start in a small area so I have more control. You can not rally help the dog if it is far away. The first things are learning to move the sheep both directions, staying behind them, moving them off a fence and calling off Every time and walking in behind them. They learn How to interact with the sheep and what is acceptable behavior. Chasing is not ect. Then we move to a larger space, then larger and more sheep. Built in to a border collies head is to keep sheep coming toward a handler but some youthful exuberance gets in the way of thoughtful working. My goal is always to have the dog thinking and figuring out the best action.
There is more going on than simply circles like how close the dog is, if he is coming in correctly or cutting off the top of sides out what will be the his outrun. He needs to be the same distance from the sheep all the way around.
Here is a short clip of Scott working as a 2 yr old. Those circles get big fast. He has a ways to go but is a talented boy
