Agree that last summer it was black but now appears to have dried and is lighter color. What I find researching on the net is that it lowers estrogen and can cause late term abortions. Cows with lower estrogen also have trouble breeding. They return to normal after they stop consuming the ergot but it takes time.
The ergot was also on the brome grass here but worse on the fescue. I couldn't find any on the other grasses.
