Death comes to us all. Life's but a walking shadow
I'll be interested in the answer myself. There is the possibility of moisture accumulating in a vented tank due to the gas exchange as the temperature varies throughout the day and night. I wouldn't consider it to be a major problem for two reasons. First the 85% ethanol should be able to tolerate a small amount of water without causing the fuel to separate simply because the percentage of ethanol is so great. Second, it has been demonstrated that ethanol actually reduces the corrosive effect of water.
If you are concerned about water vapor, you can attach a drying column on the tank vent so as to trap any water vapor but still allow the tank to vent. There is a possibility of some chemical reaction between some component in raw gasoline and the ethanol but I haven't seen that mentioned in the literature.
But the first question is, how long would 300 gallons last you? How many miles per year do you drive this vehicle and what is the mpg using E85?
Finally, I really like this idea. I might take it even one step farther. How about putting a tank on a small utility trailer so that you can easily unhook the tank/trailer when you are home?
