Put them on tractors as soon as you think they're big enough. I watched someone close to me miss that opportunity with his daughters, even though one of them probably could have been drawn to farming.

Also, empower them so they don't take any crap off people, especially boys.

Example: My daughter was being harrassed by a boy sitting behind her early in high school. They dated briefly and he was being a lout. The teacher said to ignore him. I told her that when he started again to jump up, point her finger at him in the middle of class and say, "Quit touching me" or "Stop bothering me." In other words, make him the issue.

"What if I get sent to the principal's office?" she asked.

I said, "That's fine. I won't get mad, but chances are the teacher will move the boy rather than take a chance that a parent will show up."

That's exactly how it played out, too.

My daughter told me years later that that was the most important thing I ever told her to do.
