I would get him a nice little 4.10 shotgun. They can do anything a big shotgun can do on a smaller scale and are excellent for rabbit and squirrel hunting. You don't have to worry about the shot traveling as far as a rifle shot in the air either. For a small gun they pack quite a punch and don't have a ton of recoil.
