Subject: RE: Winter is mirror of 1936 frigid storms

Cherokee County, Northwest Iowa
I wish I would have asked more and listened more to my parents about a lot of their history, the winter of 1936 here in Northwest Iowa is a fine example. I remember seeing pictures of snow so deep they dug tunnels to get out of houses to get to the barn, and then the summer of 1936 was either the worst or second to worst drought of the 1930's, around here at least. I do remember my father telling me that his Uncle Bob drove into Pierson to buy a case of sodas to help celebrate the 4th of July, 1936, and that they could see the smoke from appr. 16 miles away as Remsen burned.

Around here this winter has been very cold, but not all that much snow, which seemed to start east of here a ways and just kept getting worse the further east you went. Sure hope we don't see a repeat of the summer of '36, anywhere.
