Lots of reasons. Problems with eyes and udders for one. The Angus beef campaign for another. And a lot of the continental breeds made their first appearance in the late 60's and early 70's and guys bought into the latest and greatest thing available when prior to that you had three main choices in Hereford,Shorthorn and Angus. A few Charolais cattle out there and Brahman but the Brahman influence would have been confined mostly to the deep south and pretty limited Charolais breeders out there. Hereford cattle in general have made great strides since the 60's and 70's as far as improvement in the breed. Herefords are like any other breed of cattle, and I have dealt with most breeds on some level or other,they have some great traits and some that need improvement.
