We switched from raising day old calves to bringing them in at 225lbs and it was the best decision ever. Deacon calves will make you question your life choices twice a day and getting some of the less intelligent ones to drink is an exercise in futility. However if you still feel compelled to raise deacons then pen them separate, feed high quality milk replacer, and remember when you're figuring your profits that your death loss in those young calves will be higher than you really want to type into a spreadsheet and that they take a ton of manual labor.
