Pinch the mucous firmly between your pinchers (thumb and forefinger) and then slowly spread them apart.  If the mucous "strings" between your pinchers, she may be in heat.  If it doesn't string it may just be a normal discharge or precalving discharge (in which case you should notice some other precalving changes).  My guess from what you described is she is in heat. (Heat = Estrus).
