Abbotsford, BC, Canada
deere5010, the GEP was a program where you could apply and get put on a list to get some free quota for new entrants to the dairy system. The list is closed right now. My dad was on it for probably 15 years or so, every year they would take like 3-5 names off the list, and every year he had to pay $100 i think to keep his name on the list. Basically we got 13.7 kg of quota for free (~1 kg of quota = 1 milking cow) plus we bought 5.5 kg of quota from the monthly exchange and the marketing board matched that with another 5.5 kg. As quota in BC costs about $43000 per kg you can see why many people wanted to be on this program. The thing is we can't sell the quota we got for free for at least 10 years. But after that point technically it could be a very profitable situation, as long as the supply management system is still around.
