A relay is needed as you can't run 12V into that 209 wire as you will inflict some damage.  All the system is looking for is that wire to be grounded for the recording to be turned on.  As far as a relay goes, a simple 4 or or 5 post model will be fine and shouldn't cost you any more than $10 at your local auto parts store or equipment dealer.  Here is a picture of how you will want to hook it up:
