W.C. Mo. | We buy 4 wt heifers and grow out to 750# then ship to feedlot. Have a pretty good local auction barn a few miles from home and watching the market is Dad's recreation. Try to buy nearly every week and ship out a pot load of 7 wt feeders every 3-4 weeks to a Nebr feedlot. Buying year round and selling year round we can follow the cattle cycles. The fastest way to go bust cattle feeding is to buy one group and sell one group each year.
Had an old cattle feeder tell me years ago " A cattle feeder is either going to die rich or poor- just depends on where the cycle is".
As far as sickness- you will be buying every disease known to cattle. Stay away from trader cattle- but even then you have to watch them like a hawk the first 3 weeks, then keep a close eye on them from then on.
You can make money on feeders but it takes a lot more work and management than a cow-calf operation. | |
