Great White North
I am going to assume you guys are talking about curling from the sweeping talk. As someone that's curled since he was 8 years old I can probably answer the questions. The sweeping is done to keep the rock traveling straight. The way the rock is thrown will make it curve either left or right as it travels down the sheet. By sweeping the rock it will travel straighter. You would want to to go straight on a hit, or to keep it from hitting a guard on a draw. Or if you throw it way to light sweeping can make the rock travel further down the ice. Good sweepers can probably carry the rock 15ft more than it would without sweeping. The front end players (the 1 and 2nd guy that throw on the team) do the most sweeping and they have to be in good shape. These guys can put something like 80% of their body wight on the head of the broom when sweeping.
