Friend of mine snowbirding in Arizona fell and broke his upper arm. Arizona hospital put a clamshell splint on it and said it would heal. 6 months later x rays in Iowa showed the same half inch gap between the bone ends. A trip to Iowa city with cutting the arm open surgery, a plate and some screws and he had a useful arm again.
