I thought I remembered reading somewhere that if you throw salt into the fireplace it will put it out?  I can't remember where I heard that but it was years ago.  When I had a wood stove in an old house I kept several packets of the big grain salt you get with those frozen soft pretzels in a container near the stove.  Luckily, I never had to use it to find out if it worked.  Anybody know if that works?
