You not only have to worry about exhaust, but also cooling air intake, but maybe simply opening the garage door a few inches would work. If you had a piece of flex and a pipe with hangers so it couldn't touch combustable materials etc, I don't see why it wouldn't work just fine in the garage. I would put CO monitor in with alarm so you would know if it somehow got into house. Also need to make sure the exhaust is not near any windows or doors etc.

Most folks buld a generator shed, but that can get sort of involved to do it right. The larger generators usually have a way to duct their cooling air out of an enclosure. Old Onans called it a VacuFlow housing with the fan sucking air over the generator and discharging it through a centrifugal blower duct that could be connected to a louver in the wall. Of course the housed units don't need anything more, but could be nice to have it in shelter for working on it, maintenance etc.
