Subject: RE: Need advice

Southern MN
I have about the same bushels and same distance. Used to hire a truck, but bought my own tandem truck for the following reasons:
1. Got tired of dealing with the truckers schedules. They have other customers, families and lives they need to live.
2. In the fall when your bins are full, its impossible to line up a trucker.
3. For my smaller bins that require a fair amount of shoveling, it sucks to be shoveling while a trucker is waiting on you to fill his hoppers.
4. Truckers prices can change without warning, tacking on fuel surcharges and such.
5. Truckers don't want to wait on you to harvest directly into their truck, so you have to bin your crop. With my own truck, I can harvest into my truck and then haul it to town.

I put 1000-1500 miles a year on my truck. It has cost me some in repairs, license, insurance, inspections, gas, and maintenance. It has given me more flexibility though. I would rather deal with the mechanical issues of my truck then deal with a hired truck driver.
