I had an 88 and a 95 chevy 1/2 tons. The 88 blew a head gasket at 100,000 miles and put oil in the water. It turned the coolant resovoir brownish. It was still brownish even after repair and flushing. I would guess that the one you are looking at either blew a gasket at one time or is currently blown.
