NEC code 630-11 allows for smaller gauge wire to be ran on a 50 amp circuit IF the circuit is solely dedicated to the welder due to the duty cycles on a welder. If it isn't that long of a run just run #6 hots and 10 on the ground and be done with it to avoid any future complications.
