Subject: Pencil pushing dry beans vs. soys

? How/why do growers in the west plant dry beans for 34.00/100# vs. 11.00/bu. soy??

These are my figures from last years expenses/acre for both:

dry beans = 11.5 for 1st r-up in spring, 87.00 for 300# fert., 60.00 for 125.000 pop. seed, 40.50 for 1st chem. spray (can't use pursuit due to sugar beets), 33.00 for 2nd chem. spray and 18.00 for desication. = 250.00
18 bags x 33.5(after deductions) = 603.00 - 250.00 = 353.00/acre

soybeans = 60.00 for 160,000 pop. seed, 58.00 for 200# fert. (some around here use 0# fert. on soys), 23.00 for 2 round-up sprays. = 141.00
45 bu. x 11.00 = 495.00 - 141.00 = 354.00/acre

Spray figures include application and each crop was sprayed once for mold so i called this a wash. With the higher risk of growing dry beans vs. soy I and most of us here in Mich.'s thumb think dry beans need to be 3.5 times the price of soy.

I realize my bags vs. bu. can vary but I think this is a close average comparison.
