SC Montana where General Custer should've stopped
A big "Cattle Baron" in our area use to say "I love when the cattle prices are low". He had built his own empire and used around 80,000 acres and owned 35-38,000 of those acres; What the moral to his saying was "It (low prices) gets rid of the people that don't need to be in the cow business". In the 1950's he used to be able to fill a train with "Big Steers" at a rail siding and ride with them back east and watch them sell. He was the last operator in the state of Montana to have "Big Steers". Big steers are steers that are run on pasture only after they are weaned. They have never seen grain or silage or a bunk whatsoever. They are harvested or sold when they are between 12-1400 pounds are may very well be 3 or 4 years old. All they have eaten is grass and seldom seen a feed truck, winter out in big country. He did well for himself and bought other equally as large ranch in Northwestern MT off of his profits. It wouldn't happen today.
