If you look at the most recent crop progress report one of the most obvious observations is the fair, good & excellent ratings for Illinois, Iowa, Minn and other states affected by the drought compared those of Ohio or PA for example.
If someone has the time it would be interesting to go back and compare the past crop progress reports with final state yields. Someone with access to a linear regression program could regress the ratings (VP, P, G, F etc ) on yield for those states and the past several years quite easily. The data is right there.
If the crop progress ratings have any relevance it should be apparent.
