Subject: That ol' hayfield

Michigan
Looking at renting a neighboring grass (and few and far between alfalfa) hayfield that has not been touched tillage wise for 20+ years. Sandy loam soil. I drilled beans after a burndown into a similar type field last year and had a poor stand due to hobby farm compaction and very high weed pressure (the lack of rain did not help either). My question for you NATers is could I resolve this problem with a pass of vertical tillage in the fall followed by a burndown in the spring? I want to prepare a decent seed bed while not moving a lot of dirt. Corn is custom planted and out of the question at this stage, could go wheat. WHAT WOULD YOU DO?
