NC Kansas | We put up a lot of sudan/forage sorghum type feeds...way more tons/acre than alfalfa and grass and the like. The John Deere impeller/flail type machines sure do a poor job actually "conditioning" the crop. Now the machines are fast and can really put some acres through in a day but you'll wait 30% to 50% longer for proper dry down...vs going slow and squeezing everthhing through rollers. I think the Deere type set-up will do a better job if you slow down a little and give it a chance to work, but if you are hiring it done and they are charging by the acre they will drive as hard as they can. We have a good younger guy in our area running a SP Deere and he takes his time and tries to do a good job for you. We just bought an older hesston/Case IH self propelled, and yeah it's slower to mow it but the hay will dry faster once it hits the ground. | |
