SW MN - mt. lake/windom | 200 sows @ 25 pigs/sow/yr = 5000 / 18 weeks = 1730 x 8 sqft / pig = 13840 sqft. dimensions of barn may vary depending on farrowing intervals. if farrow every 8-9 weeks then 100x140 2 rooms. If farrow every 4-4.5 weeks then 120x120 4 rooms.
Mike Brumm (formerly with U of neb. now independent consulting) worked on a research project to house all finishing pigs under one roof for the small (600hd) farrowing units. Goal was to be competitive on facility costs w/o any adverse health issues I do believe. May want to consult him on design when time comes. | |
