mjl - 8/14/2013 08:14  If your raising your own corn, with manure from the hogs, isn't high grain prices one of a small hog producers few competitive advantages over the big guys?

IF you own the land yes high priced grain works pretty good for you.   Thing is, if the hogs are losing money (avg for a years time) and being subsidized by raising the grain, why go to the work of raising hogs for less net pay?

IF you rent the land sooner or later your rent is going to make your cost of producing the grain very close to what it cost to buy it, maybe even more.

Independent/small hog producers hold the advantage over the big guys in nearly every aspect of producing hogs.      The integrators have the advantage of the packing plant to produce pork, that is their one and only advantage albeit it is a huge advantage.

Very good point, I keep forgetting how integrated it has become.
