If you have access look into corn silage. Some people on here don't like it but it is GREAT feed and I find it is WAY cheaper than feeding hay.

I feed 27lbs of silage and 19lbs of stalks in 2nd trimester. 3rd trimester I feed 35lbs of silage and 19lbs of stalks ( and maybe 2lbs of ddgs). Lactating I feed 50lbs of silage and 19lbs of stalks with 3lbs of ddgs.

On this ration if the winter is somewhat hard my cows are in perfect condition; if an easy winter this ration will make them fat so I feed them a little less.

Sharpen your pencil if you have corn or someone that will sell you standing corn silage is the way to go over hay (In my opinion). The cows will look good and from the sounds of it you are doing chores almost everyday anyway. I usually put two days worth of feed out and if they clean it up in one day they will have to wait to get fed till the third day.
