How about using the larger tubing for the inner part of the boom, then switching down to the smaller tubing as you go out. Maybe you can get tubing that telescopes together to make a good joint (like 1-1/4" with 1/8" wall to go over your current 1" tubing)? I'd try and stay with the lightest wall thickness you can, especially if you're going to use it for the whole boom. Unfortunately, it's going to be kind of a trial and error process to decide on material for the boom because the stresses are hard to predict. I'd probably try the larger tube with the 1/8" wall, or maybe look for a heavier wall in a 1-1/4" or 1" size. It would all depend on where you're experiencing the breaking now, too.
