I must be the only guy that hates sand. It has caused me nothing but problems and for 25 bucks a ton those are problems I don't need. the cows I have on mats do great. I bed with fine chopped corn stalks and cell count is always under 150. I bet most guys that say mats didn't work is because they had small stalls. I have a 4 row tail to tail barn with 10 foot stall beds and neck rail at 50 inches high. sand bedding is definitely more forgiving to poor stall designs. As far as lame cows I don't care what anyone says. if you got Holsteins you are going to have some lame cows all the time. Especially if you have warts. Once you have them you will always have them. sand aint going to stop them.
