south central IOWA
Jim......you can't tell me we have such an extreme difference in climate. We're in southern Iowa not Texas and we're not even dangerously close to Missouri!

You already told yourself it was drying so fast that you thought it was too dry to ted. What do you think would keep happening? You rake 2 windows together Thursday at 10, that mixes the wetter (if that's what you want to call it) bottom in with the already too dry of hay, give it a couple hours like normal to dry some of the green stuff some more and bale away. Your result is a bale with good moisture, color, and less leaf loss. Less leaf loss from not tedding and from raking when you still have green leaves that don't fall off when raked.

Oh, then we also always bale at 1800 RPM's. It's about 350 RPM's under PTO speed so that we lose as few of leaves as possible.

It wouldn't be hard to try a small patch like that the next time you know. ;-)
